Mauritius Culture and History

Culture

The people of Mauritius are immigrants of European (mostly French) settlers, the Franco-Mauritians; African slaves and creoles, the Afro-Mauritians; Chinese merchants, the Sino-Maurtians; and Indian workers, the Indo-Mauritians. Such aesthetic difference and geographic separation have led to a nationalized sense of pride. There is uniqueness in being a Mauritian despite not having a bestowed language and customs. For this reason, Mauritius is often considered as a global example of successful cultural integration. Traditional music from the West and India are broadly heard. The only original music and the national music is Sega, a tribal-based drumbeat lower on African rhythms. It has a ceremonial dance that is often done in sequential. The women dance in exciting ways to lure partners, but they are not permitted to kiss or touch.

History

The island of Mauritius was supposedly uninhabited until 1638. It was then that the Dutch, under the Dutch East India Company, made their first effort to colonize the land, designated after the Prince of Denmark, Maurice of Nassau. Portuguese investigators visited in the early sixteenth century. In 1638 the Dutch made efforts to colonize and populate the island. They brought little numbers of African slaves and imported sugarcane to the island. Trouble sustaining the settlements led to their total abandonment in about 1710. The British invaded and occupied the strategic islands in 1810. Réunion was given back to the French four years later due to the lack of safe harbors. Slavery was abolished in 1835. This led to large-scale demographic changes.
