Dubai Culture and History

Culture

Culture in Dubai is sourced in Islamic traditions that form UAE National’s lifestyles. It is essential that when tourists visit Dubai, they must respect and act suitably, as the minority group of Emiratis is very protecting over their culture and traditions. It is advised that visitors and refugees do not flaunt their Western culture habits in the streets, where they can be observed by nationals who may find it annoying. There have been various complaints in the past by nationals who have formulated their opinion through the media about their homeland being taken over by the Western world.

History

Ome 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, led by the Maktoum Family, settled at the mouth of the creek in 1833. The creek was a natural harbor, and Dubai soon converted into a hub for the fishing, pearling and sea trade. Dubai was a thriving port, by the turn of the 20th century, The late Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, set to have the waterway dredged. It was a dangerous, costly, and impractical project. Ultimately it strengthened Dubai’s position as a major trading and re-export hub. Since the 1960s, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, then leader of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum had conceived of creating a federation of the Emirates in the region. In 1971 Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and (in 1972) Ras Al Khaimah, combined to constitute the United Arab Emirates.
